چکیده

S U M M A R Y We examine the relations between spatial symmetry properties of earthquake patterns along faults in California (CA) and local velocity structure images to test the hypothesis that ruptures on bimaterial faults have statistically preferred propagation directions. The analysis employs seismic catalogues for 25 fault zones in CA. We distinguish between clustered and homogeneous parts of each catalogue, using a recently introduced earthquake cluster analysis, and examine asymmetry of offspring with respect to parent events within the clustered portion of each catalogue. The results indicate strong asymmetric patterns along large faults with prominent bimaterial interfaces (e.g. sections of the San Andreas Fault), with enhanced activities in the directions predicted for the local velocity contrasts, and absence of significant asymmetry along most other faults. Assuming the observed asymmetric properties of seismicity reflect the properties of the parent earthquake ruptures, the discussed methodology and results can be used to develop refined estimates of seismic shaking hazard associated with individual fault zones.

Insights into the Aftershocks and Inter-Seismicity for Some Large Persian Earthquakes

This paper focuses on aftershocks behavior and seismicity along some co-seismic faults for large earthquakes in Iran. The data of aftershocks and seismicity roughly extracted from both the Institute of Geophysics the University of Tehran (IGUT) and International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogs. Apply some essential methods on 43 large earthquakes data; like the depth, magnitude as well as t...

The 1992 Landers Earthquake Sequence: Seismological Observations

The (Mw6.1, 7.3, 6.2) 1992 Landers earthquakes began on April 23 with the Mw6.1 1992 Joshua Tree preshock and form the most substantial earthquake sequence to occur in California in the last 40 years. This sequence ruptured almost 100 km of both surficial and concealed faults and caused aftershocks over an area 100 km wide by 180 km long. The faulting was predominantly strike slip and three mai...

Stress triggering in thrust and subduction earthquakes and stress interaction between the southern San Andreas and nearby thrust and strike-slip faults

[1] We argue that key features of thrust earthquake triggering, inhibition, and clustering can be explained by Coulomb stress changes, which we illustrate by a suite of representative models and by detailed examples. Whereas slip on surface-cutting thrust faults drops the stress in most of the adjacent crust, slip on blind thrust faults increases the stress on some nearby zones, particularly ab...

Foreshocks and Aftershocks of the Great 1857 California Earthquake

The San Andreas fault is the longest fault in California and one of the longest strike-slip faults anywhere in the world, yet we know little about many aspects of its behavior before, during, and after large earthquakes. We conducted a study to locate and to estimate magnitudes for the largest foreshocks and aftershocks of the 1857 M 7.9 Fort Tejon earthquake on the central and southern segment...

Earthquake Source Parameters and Fault Kinematics in the Eastern California Shear Zone

Based on waveform data from a profile of aftershocks following the north-south trace of the 28 June 1992 Landers rupture across the Mojave desert, we construct a new velocity model for the Mojave region that features a thin, slow crust. Using this model, we obtain source parameters, including depth and duration, for each of the aftershocks in the profile and, in addition, any significant (M > 3...
